What is a Special Tourism Zone?
A Special Tourism Zone is an area designated by law that requires special resources such as tourism related services, information centers, and promotional activities, to strengthen its tourism environment to make the area more attractive for foreign tourists. There are currently 28 Special Tourist Zones in Korea (13 cities as of January 1, 2013)
Introduction of the Jamsil Special Tourism Zone
Location: Lotte World - Seokchon Lake - Bangi Eatery Alley - Olympic Park
Designation Date: 3/15/2012 (Seoul Metropolitan Government Public Notice No. 2012-58)
Major Tourism Resources: Lotte World, Lotte World Tower, Seokchon Lake, Bangi Eatery Alley, Olympic Park, etc.
▢ Qualifications for Special Tourism Zone Designation (for the Jamsil Special Tourism Zone)
- Number of Tourists: more than 500,000 foreign tourists over the past 1 year.
- Facilities: the tourist information center, public convenience facilities, and accommodations must be able to sufficiently meet tourist demands.
- Land Conditions: the land area that is not directly related to tourism (ex. forests, farmland, industrial land, and residential areas) must not exceed 10% of the area of the zone
▢ Expected Results from the Designation of Special Tourism Zones
- Increase brand value as a cultural tourism city and promote the tourism industry.
- Priority financing through the “Tourism Promotion Development Fund” on facilities that have been deemed necessary for attracting tourists (i.e., culture, sports, accommodations, retail shops). (by the Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism)
- Support funding from the Seoul Metropolitan Government for promoting the Special Tourism Zone through the establishment of a tourist information system and festival planning.
- Easing of restrictions on billboards and on general and rest area restaurants.
- Easing of restrictions on the construction of certain types of buildings.
